polyurethane (PU) foam generally contains two main ingredients. The first one is “Polyol”.
Polyol is a type of alcohol that is too dangerous for human health and you need to know that it’s not eatable.
As we mentioned, the ingredients of PU foam are deadly, the main concern is about the material named “diisocyanate”.
Do you even know that technicians who make the PU foam that face the dangerous situation while their working on PU foam process?
If you want to know, read this article completely.
The question is, what’s wrong with PU foam, the workers who make the PU rubber wearing full-body protective gear and respirators?

The workers who make PU foam wear respirators for protective himself. When processing toxic materials, there is a concern that the chemicals used in the production may exit into the surrounded spaces.
In 2001, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) had identified PU foam processing & manufacturing facilities as a potential major source of dangerous air pollutants such as methylene chloride, hydrochloric acid (HCl), 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and hydrogen cyanide (HCN).
These substances are maybe dangerous & can irritates the lung, eyes, and mucous membranes. The can even irritates the central nervous system, and cancer.

You need to know that these materials might be hazardous for the people who buy furniture, that means they are might be toxic!

When you buy some pieces of PU foam upholstered furniture home, the risks may continue with emitting toxic gasses into the air. These gas emissions known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and may cooperate to a variable of short-term or long-term wide range of risks from headaches and allergies to cancer.

polyurethane (PU) foam: scientific research

Furthermore, scientists & researchers from south Korea tested different kinds of furniture and found the high level of VOCs in the PU Foams.

Also, if you have a risk of patient or fighting against cancer, it is better for you to buy an alternative upholstered furniture not PU foam! Also, you must be aware of PU foam when you are fighting against cancer.
One of the main diisocyanatos used to make PE foam is called “Toluene diisocyanate”. It has been classified as “reasonably to be anticipated as a human carcinogen” by the US National Toxicology Program.

We have some evidence that the “Toluene diisocyanate” is added more than necessary to make PU foam. When you have a PU rubber that is in your home may emit significant carcinogenic “Toluene diisocyanate” Human exposure to indoor pollutions in sleep circumstances.

Considerations about polyurethane (PU) foam

If you have a PU foam made furniture and it is not in a position to change that, change your air quality & use an air purifier for improving the air quality or by opening windows frequently.

The PU rubber is a major substance to landfill.

When the toxicity has been created, it is hard to get rid of it without bad circumstances. We know that the PU foam is not biodegradable, that means that it goes into growing landfills.

We know that we are facing with a serious problem right now. The law does not need furniture producers to use fire- or flame-retardant chemicals anymore. Interestingly, we need to do with all this PU foam treated with flame retardants. People can find the alternative instead the PU foam. Unfortunately, we don’t have a good & reliable alternative. Most likely it is going to be recycled, which is not ideal either because it will come back to us in other products.

Polyurethane (PU) foam: Serious Problems

PU foam creates deadly gasses when it burned. According to this, we have a question, what happens when a building with all this PU foam catches on fire?

When the PU foam catches the fire, foam sofas can reach temperatures over 760 degrees Celsius less than a minute. Some research shown that PU foam produces a big amounts of hydrogen cyanide at a faster rate than other materials like nylon, cotton and wool.

As we mentioned, the half of PU foam structure is diisocyanate, a petroleum combination.
